Pros:
  • Rechargeable
  • Compact size
Cons:
  • Internal wet/dry mix control
  • Not the most versatile

A rechargeable, lithium-ion battery enables the Red Witch Violet delay pedal to free you from having to find and connect to a power source while your're playing, thereby avoiding dodgy or noisy power sources and reduced wiring mess, wherever you play. Utilizing its own, built-in charging circuit, a 4 to 6 hour charge using a normal 9 volt guitar pedal power adapter (after the initial 12 hour first time charge) will give you up to 24 hours of playing time before a recharge. Battery cells have around a 2 year life, can be purchased where you buy Red Witch gear and are easy to replace. Housed in a sturdy, metal enclosure measuring only 3 11/32" x 2" x 1 15/16" (including jack socket nuts and knobs), the Red Witch Violet delay pedal is tiny by normal pedal standards. Should you need to you could fit all seven pedals in the range on a pedal board just 14" long. The repeat and delay knobs at the top give you tone adjustment with a rugged, true-bypass switch at the bottom. Patterned, rubber bumpers for underneath help minimize slip and if you need extra anchoring a piece of Velcro is supplied.

While many analog delays max out at around 600 milliseconds of delay the Red Witch Violet delay pedal lets you dial up to 800 milliseconds using the Delay control. The Repeat control lets you adjust the number of repeats from a just a few through to almost continuous oscillation. Using Repeat and Delay together gives rise to lilting sounds and blends that are great for experimenting or coming up with unique intros or outros. Simple controls and velvety, full tones the way they should be. To achieve its compactness it seems the makers of the Red Witch Violet delay pedal may have had to compromise in one key area, the wet/dry blend control which you have to access by removing the back-plate. It is not a difficult process, removing 4 screws and then the back-plate, you find a small hole on the right side of the circuit board about two thirds of the way up. This is the trim pot which you can adjust with a suitable screwdriver. The stock setting is 40% wet / 60% dry, well suited to a guitar with single coil pickups like a Stratocaster. If you have a guitar with humbuckers like a Les Paul try using a wetter blend say 60% wet / 40% dry.

It may not be the make or break feature for many guitarists, but nor should we undervalue the stylish, subtle graphics and gloss finish which add to the attraction of the Red Witch Violet delay pedal.

Being from a top of the line effects maker, the Red Witch Violet delay pedal is a professional quality component at an entry level price, so you don't have to spend hundreds of dollars on a boutique pedal.
