Pros:
  • Great-sounding high-gain distortion
  • Small, rechargeable
Cons:
  • A little lacking at tweaking extremes of treble and bass

Using a humbucker equipped guitar with the Red Witch Seven Sisters SSI001 Ivy Distortion pedal and setting the volume control knob around twelve o'clock gives you a level roughly equal to the clean channel on the valve amp. Dialing the volume control knob to just below 3 o'clock and the gain control knob to maximum brings on an awesome metal sound, chunking rhythms and leads that still cut through and letting you nail squealing, pinched harmonics with ease. This is a glassy lead tone that also fits well with grungy ’90s type jams especially with an amp that’s already on the edge of breaking up. Wind the gain back to around 9 o'clock and push the volume up a little past 3 o'clock to push the front end of a valve amp into a snarly hard rock rhythm sound with chimy leads that still have that hint of gravel in the tone. This setting gives more treble bite with clarity ideal for choppier, percussive rhythm. Apart from the great tones the Red Witch Seven Sisters SSI001 Ivy Distortion Effect Pedal has remarkably low power consumption. You can use a regular guitar pedal power adapter and after the first-time twelve hour charge, subsequent charges only take four hours, and you are rewarded with a massive 220 hours of continuous use between charges.

As with the other pedals in the range the Red Witch Seven Sisters SSI001 Ivy Distortion Effect pedal is petite in size, contains a rechargeable lithium ion battery, contains true-bypass switching, non-skid feet and attractive finish and graphics (see here for more details).

Overall, Ivy acts mainly on the mid's, with relatively small drops in bass and treble when it's switched on, which will satisfy all but those who really need piercing high-end lead or a huge, fat rhythmic crunch.
