Pros:
  • Three easily switchable, distinct overdrive stages that can be individually pre-set
  • Can adjust the 3-band EQ to preserve original guitar tone through each stage
Cons:
  • Delay when bypassing effects
  • Bulkier than some other stompbox overdrives

The gig-fx VOD 3-Stage Variable OverDrive Distortion pedal is like having three overdrive pedals in one. The "I" shaped pedal cleverly allows all controls to be on the top of the unit for easy access. Each distortion level has its own Level and Gain controls via a dual concentric knob allowing you to pre-set gain and distortion. Rather than a continuous control of a single parameter as in a conventional wah type pedal the pedal clicks into three distinct positions. Cycling up through each position steps you through three increasingly aggressive and edgy distortion modes, all the way from just a clean boost to shred. Change quickly and easily from a mild bluesy tone to a heavier crunch then to a highly overdriven lead sound, all without the need to hit multiple buttons.

Instead of just a single "Tone" control, the gig-fx VOD 3-Stage Variable OverDrive Distortion pedal incorporates a three band EQ shared by each distortion mode. Individually adjust Treble, Mid and Bass, with a wide range of cut and boost (+/- 15dB) on each making it easy to create distinctive tones. Importantly, you can preserve the original tone of your guitar through each step up in distortion. By adjusting the EQ, you can choose to maintain your guitar's fundamental tone, or augment it by using the cut and boost on lows, mids or highs distortion to create your own sound.

The careful attention to design in the gig-fx VOD 3-Stage Variable OverDrive Distortion pedal continues with three bright LEDs which show which level of distortion is currently active, all analog circuitry for better tonal quality, and optical switching for better reliability and less noise than mechanical switches. There is a small delay bulit in before the switching activates to avoid the effect dropping out when you cycle back to the lowest position, but this is something you will get used to and be able to compensate for. Rugged construction using high-grade aircraft aluminium keeps the unit relatively lightweight.

When you add it all up, the innovative design, well executed and robust construction, ease of use and versatility of tones you can achieve, make the gig-fx VOD 3-Stage Variable OverDrive Distortion pedal well worth looking at for both working and part time guitar players.
